Fire_cci Burned Area dataset

In this webpage you will be able to download the burned area (BA) data generated by the Fire_cci project. Fire_cci is one of the Essential Climate Variables (Fire disturbance) under the European Space Agency’s Climate Change Initiative. The scope of the project is to provide long-term burned area information for global vegetation and atmospheric modellers.

The Fire_cci BA products were obtained combining spectral information from MERIS and thermal information from MODIS active fire products.

Version 4.1 of the Fire_cci BA dataset is available for years 2005 to 2011 at two different resolutions:

  • pixel (0.00278º - ~300m)
  • grid (0.25°)

The current version of the BA product is 4.1, released on July 2016. The global validation and assessment of the product is currently ongoing. The previous version, v3.1, is still available, and it covers the period 2006-2008. We do not recommend using the two versions simultaneously, as they were obtained from different algorithms.

For further information on the characteristics and variables of the dataset, please refer to the Product User Guide.

We will also much appreciate if users could give us their feedback completing the following survey.

Please provide this information before downloading the product, to keep you up to date with new releases, and for statistical purposes
