Francisco Escobar, Principal Investigator, University of Alcalá (UAH)

The principal investigator has devoted his scientific career to the field of Geographical Information Technologies since 1990. His numerous international publications, which can be consulted on his CV (see link to his homepage, below), testify to his work in the development of Geografical Information Systems; 16 books, 4 book chapters and over 40 articles and fully published international conference papers. Of particular interest due to its pioneering nature was the publication of the 1994 manual Prácticas de Sistemas de Información Geográfica: Pc ARC/INFO e IDRISI (Ed. RA-MA). More recently, Escobar has published advances in Thematic cartography and in particular the more advanced spatial modelling techniques in Geovisualisation and Multimedia Cartography, compiled in three important publications for John Wiley (Thematic Cartography and Transformations, Cartography and the Impact of the Quantitative Revolution y New Approaches in Thematic Cartography). In the third of these volumes, detailed treatment is given to the class of spatial models for development of future land use scenarios known as Cellular Automata, an approach that occupies a central place in the methodology employed in this project.
