MODELLING LAND USE DYNAMICS IN THE SPANISH NETWORK OF NATIONAL PARKS AND THEIR HINTERLAND (DUSPANAC) |

PARTICIPATORY WORSHOPS
The concept of participation, inviting consultation with various stakeholders (managers, citizens, and other actors) about decisions that affect their environment and daily life, is not new. But it is all too common to find processes initially denominated "particpatory", in which participation merely comprises sharing the results and conclusions obtained with stakeholders in the final phases of projects already completed as an "value-added" component or to comply with legal requirements. Participatory modeling, which we deal with here, has demonstrated its validity as a result of a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach developed since the concept first emerged in the nineteen-sixties. For this reason, in the DUSPANAC project, efforts have been made to implement the participatory process as widely as possible, involving stakeholders, not just as passive subjects at the end of the process, but from the initial stages of the project. This approach is part of a wider strategy to integrate methodological and discursive qualitative research with quantitative analysis tools. The first stages of the work comprised the identification and analysis of the land use change dynamics to be represented in the model by means of the participatory process. This allowed the parameters necessary to represent these dynamics to be identified before model development began. The benefits of this approach go beyond simply providing ongoing critical evaluation of the work in progress or better dissemination of the project objectives. Undoubtedly, most important of all, this methodology brings researchers and stakeholders closer together, allowing a process of shared learning to begin and enhancing the possibility of reaching the common goal of a sustainable Doñana. With this in mind, we organised the following participatory workshops: Workshop 1 The role of stakeholders: Parameterisation of the Cellular Automata model Location and date: Acebuche administrative centre for the Doñana Natural Area (END), February 22, 2012 Click here to go to the pages for this workshop Workshop 2 Model calibration: Participatory evaluation of simulations; establishing future demand and location Location and date: Acebuche administrative centre for the Doñana Natural Area (END), December 11, 2012 Click here to go to the pages for this workshop |
